Tips for Safety in the Surf

Surfing is great fun, but to keep it fun you have to make sure you stay in one piece! All our Surf Lessons teach you about how to handle yourself and stay safe in the surf. The following are just some of the things we teach.

Safe To Go In?
Avoiding Rips
Paddling Out
Wipe Outs
Surf Etiquette

Safe To Go In?
Most important thing before you go surfing is to check for any dangers: rips, rocks, shallow sand banks etc. Other surfers can also be a danger - you don't want to go surfing in overcrowded conditions until you really know what you are doing. We teach you how to choose a safe surfing zone, and how to select where to enter and exit that zone. And before you enter the water, we teach you the importance of picking a landmark and using that to make sure you stay safely in your surfing zone and don't drift off into danger.

Avoiding Rips
Like most West Australian surfing beaches, the Rivermouth beach is prone to rips. We teach you how to identify any rips, and how to stay safely away from them. And what to do if you are ever caught up in a rip - don't panic and paddle across it back into the wave zone.

Paddling Out
There are different techniques to get out through the waves instead of getting dumped by them: the push up, the eskimo roll and the duck dive. We teach you which method to use when.

Wipe Outs
You can't go surfing without getting wiped out, but you can learn the best and safest way to do it. We teach you the cover up technique, and how to come off the back of the board rather than fall in front of it.

Surf Etiquette
Surfing may not have too many written rules, but there are some unwritten ones, and you don't want to break them! It is important to learn about surf etiquette the easy way rather than by dropping in on front of some agro 6 foot local!
