Best Time to Surf in Margaret River: A Local’s Knowledge of Seasonal Guide
Margaret River is one of the world's great surfing destinations. However, if you've never been before or you're planning your first lesson, not knowing when to visit or when to surf can make the difference between a great holiday or a frustrating one.
As someone who has surfed this coastline for over 30 years and led surf lessons here through every season, I'll share exactly what conditions to expect throughout the year.
The Short Answer
The best all-round conditions for surf lessons are autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November). Winters produce the most powerful surf, and summers are the gentlest for complete beginners. There is truly no bad time to surf Margaret River; you just need to know what each season offers.
Summer (December to February): Perfect for First-Timers
Summer brings smaller, cleaner swells driven by the sea breeze. Water temperatures are warmest (around 22°C), which means a short wetsuit is needed for most adults. I use a 3’2 full-length wetsuit all year round. It keeps the sun off and protects you if you fall. Wind patterns tend to be afternoon southerlies — so early morning sessions are the ideal window for the calmest conditions.
If you're booking a first surf lesson for children or complete beginners, summer gives you the most forgiving conditions. Our group lessons in December and January are especially popular with families visiting the region during school holidays.
• Swell size: 0.5–1.5m average
• Water temp: 20–24°C (no wetsuit required)
• Best for: first-timers, children, families
• Tip: Book morning sessions to avoid afternoon sea breezes
Autumn (March to May): The Sweet Spot
Autumn is widely considered the best all-round season for Margaret River. Long swells from the Southern Indian Ocean begin to arrive more consistently, the crowds start to thin out, and conditions become clean and orderly — ideal for learning proper technique and enjoying a variety of waves.
Water temperatures are still warm from summer (18–22°C), and the offshore winds that arrive in autumn clean up the wave faces beautifully. If you can only visit once, autumn is the season.
• Swell size: 1.0–1.8m average
• Water temp: 18–22°C
• Best for: all levels, intermediate progression, private lessons
• Tip: This is peak season for intermediate and advanced surfers — book ahead
Winter (June to August): For the Passionate Learner
Winter brings Margaret River's famous big swells — up to 4–6m at exposed breaks like Surfer's Point. This is the season that surprises many visitors, because the right spots in the region still offer sheltered, manageable conditions for lessons.
At MRSA, we select our lesson locations based on daily conditions, which means even in winter, we find excellent, appropriate breaks for every skill level. A 3/2 wetsuit keeps you comfortable, and the raw power of a proper winter swell is genuinely transformative for anyone who loves the ocean.
• Swell size: 1.5–4m+ at exposed breaks; 0.8–1.5m at sheltered spots
• Water temp: 17–19°C (wetsuit required)
• Best for: intermediate to advanced, passionate beginners, those who want to see the region at its most powerful
• Tip: Ask us about our winter lesson locations — we know where to find the magic
Spring (September to November): Under-Rated and Excellent
Spring is the hidden gem of the Margaret River surf calendar. Winter swells are tapering, conditions are becoming cleaner, and water temperatures are rising. The crowds of summer haven't arrived yet. For groups, schools, and corporate bookings, spring offers exceptional value and conditions.
• Swell size: 1.0–2.0m average
• Water temp: 17–20°C
• Best for: groups, schools, corporate events, anyone who wants a great experience without peak-season prices
Ocean Safety: What to Know Year-Round
As a registered paramedic and qualified surf instructor, ocean safety is never an afterthought at MRSA — it is part of every lesson. Regardless of season, we cover:
How to read surf conditions before entering the water
Rip identification and what to do if caught in one
Surfboard control and hazard awareness
How to fall safely to protect yourself and others
How MRSA are involved in Ecotourism and the sustainability of our region and its ecosystems that surround the ocean
Margaret River's coastline is powerful year-round. Learning with qualified, safety-conscious instructors is not optional — it's essential.
