How to Select Beginner Surf Equipment
Choosing the right surf equipment is one of the biggest factors in how quickly and safely you progress as a beginner. Start with a softboard surfboard — they’re stable, buoyant, and far safer than hard boards when you’re learning. A length of 8-9 ft is ideal for most adults, while kids can use something slightly shorter, say 7ft. Look for plenty of width and volume, as this helps with balance, paddling, and catching waves early.
Pair your board with a comfortable, well-fitted wetsuit suited to local water temperatures. In Margaret River, a 3/2 steamer is often the best option. Plastic fins are always a safer option when you first start. Surfboards can be dangerous at the best of times, and minimising the harm with plastic fins and soft boards is always recommended.
