The Complete Beginner's Guide to Surfing in Margaret River
Margaret River is one of Australia's most iconic surf destinations — and it's not just for the pros. Whether you've never set foot on a surfboard or you're coming back to it after years away, Margaret River has the perfect conditions, beaches, and instructors to get you up and riding.
Here's everything you need to know before your first lesson.
Why Margaret River is perfect for beginners
The Margaret River region has an incredible variety of breaks. While the famous main break at Margaret River is world-class and best left and right peak to experienced surfers, there are plenty of sheltered, gentle beaches nearby that are perfect for beginners. Our instructors at Margaret River Surfing Academy know every one of them — and we are always onto the forecast to pick the safest, most suitable location based on the day's conditions. With 30 years plus of surfing experience in the area, we will know what’s best for you.
What happens in a beginner surf lesson?
A typical beginner group lesson with us runs for 2 hours and covers:
Ocean safety and surf etiquette — how to share the water responsibly
Reading the waves — understanding sets, rips, and conditions
Paddling technique — the foundation of good surfing
The pop-up — how to get from lying to standing on the board
Catching your first waves — with our coaches right there in the water with you
All equipment is provided — wetsuit, surfboard, and everything else. Just bring your swimmers, zinc, and a bottle of water.
How much do surf lessons cost?
At Margaret River Surfing Academy, beginner group lessons start from just $40 for children and $50 for adults. Private group lessons are also available from $65 per person — great for couples or families who want more personalised attention.
Do I need to be able to swim?
We recommend being comfortable swimming at least 25 metres. That said, all of our coaches hold First Aid certificates and qualifications in Surf Search & Rescue or Bronze Medallion through Surf Life Saving Australia. Safety is always our number one priority.
When Is the best time to learn to surf in Margaret River?
Honestly? Almost any time of year. The Margaret River region has surf year-round. Summer (December–March) brings warmer water and gentler swells — ideal for beginners. Winter brings more powerful swells, which are better suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, but we can always find a sheltered spot.
