Top 5 Surf Spots in the Margaret River Region for Beginners
The Margaret River coastline stretches for over 130km and is home to dozens of surf breaks — from world-class reef breaks to mellow, sandy-bottomed beginner beaches. If you're just starting out, knowing where to paddle in (and where to stay out of!) can make all the difference.
Here are five spots in the region that are well-suited to beginners — and the tips our experienced coaches share about each one.
1. Grunters (Gas Bay)
One of our favourite spots for beginner lessons, Grunters offers a gentle, consistent beach break that's perfect for first-timers. The wave breaks slowly over a sandy bottom, giving beginners plenty of time to pop up. It's away from the crowds of more popular spots, which means more space to learn.
2. Surfers Point (for watching, not yet for beginners!)
This is the famous main break at Margaret River — home to world surfing competitions. We bring our beginner students here not to surf, but to watch. Seeing experienced surfers in action is one of the best ways to understand wave selection, positioning, and style. When you're ready to progress, this is the break to aspire to.
3. South Point / Boranup Area
On the right conditions, some of the beaches in this area offer mellow waves in a spectacular, remote setting. Our guided surf tours often take intermediate surfers here to explore breaks away from the tourist trail.
4. The River Mouth, Prevelly
The river mouth area where we're based offers varied conditions depending on the swell. On small days it can be a fantastic beginner wave, and our instructors can always read the conditions to know exactly when it's right for a group lesson.
4. Gas Bay, Prevelly
A beautiful sheltered beach south of Margaret River town. On smaller swell days, Gas Bay beach break produces friendly, rolling waves that are ideal for beginners. The scenery alone is worth the trip — surrounded by coastal bush with stunning views down the beach.
